Privacy policy

This policy explains what information TrendCanopy (“we,” “us”), at www.trendcanopy.com, collects when you visit, how cookies and advertising work on this site, and the choices you have. The site is operated by Marcia Pat Reid.

Information we collect

• Information you send us, for example when you email us. We use it only to reply and keep a record of corrections.
• Technical data that any website receives, such as IP address, browser type and the page requested. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes this data to deliver and secure the site.
• Privacy-first site statistics: we use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views and measure page speed. It does not use cookies or local storage, does not fingerprint visitors and does not track you across sites. It collects data such as the page URL, referrer, browser and device type, country and performance timings. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
• Analytics data collected with Google Analytics: pages viewed, time on site, referring site, device and browser type and approximate location (see “Google Analytics” below).
• Push notification data, only if you choose to turn on browser notifications: see “Browser push notifications” below.
• Advertising data, if and when we show ads: see “Advertising and Google AdSense” below.

We do not sell personal information for money, and we do not ask you to create an account.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small text files stored on your device. We use:

• Essential storage: your cookie choice is saved in your browser’s local storage so we don’t ask again.
• Analytics cookies set by Google Analytics (see below). If you click “Reject” in our cookie banner, Google Analytics is turned off in your browser on later page loads.
• Cloudflare Web Analytics is cookieless, so it runs without setting any cookies.
• Advertising cookies set by Google and other ad vendors, if we run ads (see below).

You can change your choice at any time with “Cookie settings” in the footer, and you can block or delete cookies in your browser settings.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, to understand how visitors use the site. Google Analytics uses cookies to collect information such as the pages you view, how long you stay on the site, the site that referred you, your browser and device type and your approximate location. We see this only as aggregated usage statistics and use it to improve our content; we do not use it to identify you. Google processes this data under Google’s privacy policy. You can opt out of Google Analytics on all websites by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, by clicking “Reject” under “Cookie settings” in our footer, or by blocking cookies in your browser.

Browser push notifications

You can choose to get browser notifications when we publish new stories. This is strictly opt-in: nothing is sent unless you click to subscribe and then allow notifications in your browser’s own permission prompt. We use OneSignal to deliver them.

• To show the sign-up prompt and notification bell, OneSignal’s script loads on our pages and stores small settings in your browser (local storage and IndexedDB), and installs a service worker that only handles notifications.
• If you subscribe, OneSignal processes a push subscription token (an identifier issued by your browser’s push service), browser and device information (such as browser type and version, operating system and language), your approximate location (derived from your IP address, such as country and time zone), and whether you receive and click notifications.
• We use this only to send notifications and measure how they perform.
• You can unsubscribe at any time with the notification bell on this site or by blocking notifications for this site in your browser settings. Clearing site data also removes the subscription from your browser.

Advertising and Google AdSense

We plan to show ads through Google AdSense to support the site. When ads are enabled:

• Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
• Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
• You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google’s Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info.
• Learn how Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services, and read how Google uses cookies in advertising.
• If you opt out of personalized ads, you may still see ads, but they will be based on general factors such as the page you are reading.

Visitors from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland will be asked for consent through a Google-certified consent management platform before personalized ads are shown.

Third-party links and embeds

Our articles link to outside sources such as news sites and government pages. Those sites have their own privacy policies, which we do not control.

Your rights as a U.S. resident

Depending on where you live (for example California under the CCPA/CPRA, and states such as Virginia, Colorado and Connecticut), you may have the right to know, access, correct or delete personal information, and to opt out of “sale” or “sharing” of personal information and targeted advertising. You can opt out of personalized ads with the Google Ads Settings link above or by rejecting cookies in our banner. We honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals where required by law. Children

This site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information (COPPA).

Data retention and security

We keep emails only as long as needed to respond and maintain correction records. Analytics data is kept according to Google Analytics retention settings. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, but the site is served only over HTTPS.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page when our practices change (for example when ads are switched on) and change the “Last updated” date above.
